Power and Snellen chart

by ddtla, Apr 19, 2007 12:00AM
1. If I am seeing 20/30 distance what would be my power in diopter for that eye?

2. Please let me know if I have a 0.25 diopter nearsighted what would I see for distance vision on the Snellen chart?

3. What about 0.5 and 1.0 diopter nearsighted, what would I see for distance vision on the Snellen chart under these condition?

Please let me know the answer to all 3 questions.
Thank you

1. dont know.  not near that easy.  could be astigmatism ,or nearsightedness or farsightedness or keratoconus or corneal opacity or 1500 other things...i have no idea.  no one does.  not enough info there, sorry.

2.  lol see answer # 1.  not near that easy.  every patient is different, but to give you a BALLPARK guess that would be true for most patients...about 20/25

3.  dont know.  every patient is different.  i have '-1.00' patients who are almost 20/20, and '-1.00' patients who are 20/200.  so many other factors...pupil size, accommodative facility, etc etc ad nauseum.  but for MOST patients a ballpark figure for -1.00 would be 20/40 or 20/50 and -0.50 would be about 20/25 or 20/30

but this is way more complicated than you're trying to make it.  acuity does not equal Rx.

I opted for blended vision and am very happy with the results. I have excellent intermediate and distance vision and have functional reading vision. I use +.75 readers for work to bring everything in focus (for close vision). For computer work, I do not need glasses. Had I known that blended vision was an option, I would never have  chosen the Rezoom IOLs as blended vision for me is far superior to multifocal lenses. The adaptation period was one day. I have no issues with depth perception or halos, ghosting, etc.

The rezoom lenses were set for 20/20. The right eye was 8.00 diopter and the left eye was 8.50 diopter. For the right eye, the monofocal lens selected was 8.50 diopter which, after the healing time, gives me 20/20 vision. (Although I could read the first four letters of the 20/15 line.) The left eye was set for 10.50 diopters which gives me between 20/25 and 20/30.  I hope your distance vision is improving. It took six weeks for my vision to stabilize.

I am glad that your vision turns out the way you wanted. I can't say the same for my case. I was seeing 20/25 bilaterally with the rezoom. The ghosting with the rezoom was the main reason I decided to them explanted.

I told my doctor that I wanted plano for the monofocal, for my right eye I am at 20/25 to 20/30. For my left eye I am at 20/40. I still see ghosting with the monofocal lens although it is less than the rezoom, the halos are gone.
However my left eye now at 20/40 is not as sharp as the rezoom. With the rezoom the ghosting separates as you move away from the object so you can see the object clearer. However with the monofocal for my left eye the ghosting does not separate but always stay inferior and to the left of the object so it always obscure the image. Since the ghosting does not separate it bothers me more than the rezoom at certain times
I told my doctor that I wanted plano for my left eye but for some reason he decided to give me a little nearsighted. He changed the power from 14D for the rezoom which I was seeing 20/20 to 20/25  to a power of 15D for the monofocal which I am now seeing 20/40 and the ghosting is still there. My near vision for that eye is not much different from my right eye and now I can't see distance object clearly with my left eye.
I am not very happy with the result for my left eye and I am thinking about going to Dr. Watz to have the left monofocal lens remove and put in another monofocal that will give me 20/20.
If I do this it will be the 3rd surgery for that eye and it may have some additional risk.
Do you have sutures on both of your eyes? How long will they stay on before he remove them?
Could you tell me the type of lens that you have. My model is SA60AT

I'm sorry to hear of your outcome. Usually when you do an explantation the results for the new implants are very predictable. Dr. Waltz suggested that I go with blended vision. The outcome was very much what he predicted. I have Tecnis 9003 lenses. They are aberration free. Sutures were put in one eye only (right eye) and stayed in for four weeks. The left eye did not require sutures.

Every time you have surgery you increase the risk of complications, but in the hands of a good surgeon, risks are minimized. (I had three surgeries on my right eye, re-center and explant) I'm sure Dr. Waltz will tell you what is best for you. So until you talk to him you won't know if a third surgery is possible.

I'm somewhat confused with the ghosting you are experiencing with the monofocal lens. I would be upset if I went through all that and ended up with ghosting again. Perhaps there's something else going on. In any case, with the Tecnis lens all the aberrations were eliminated. I hope things work out for you and that you are able to get the left eye corrected. If it's possible, you'll end up with blended vision like me that I think you will like.
