Red eye

by nikki633, Mar 29, 2007 12:00AM
My left eye has been red for 13 years, for a long time I relieved it with visine, and then one day (after 7 years) the visine quit working, so I went to a doctor, got sent around to specialists until they said that I had episcleritis, they treated that with everything, antibiotics, steroids oral and drops and tested me for every disease associated (none positive) They said that the episcleritis was associated with my autoimmune thyroid disease Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, and eventually it would just clear up (this was over a couple of years) Now he sent me to a diff doc and said it was some kind of allergy, and put me on steriods, antibiotics, and lid washes.  I don't know what kind of specialist to go to now, I have no clue what to do. I'm tired of doctors guessing whats wrong, without doing research.  I'm obviously an abnormality, but someone should be able to do more than guess. Does anyone know what kind of specialist to see, I live in San Antonio Texas.  I have no pain, or any other problems, it just looks bad, which I can deal with, but I just would like answers.

this probably is episcleritis, based on that description of your symptoms and eye/medical history.

if the steroids didnt work, there's not a whole lot else you or your doctors can do.  visine *always* stops working just like you describe.  sometimes episcleritis is just inexplicably chronic, especially when associated with autoimmune disease.

i dont knwo what else to tell you.  if you've been to cornea/anterior segment specialists and they have tried a bunch of stuff that didnt work, then thisis going to be tough to solve.  its not like there's some surgical procedure that can be performed to fix this w/o causing all kinds of other symptoms.

To: Need Urgent Help
Hi, Im from London and I need help. I have had red eyes for about 3 years now. I dont know why. I got my vision checked out and they sed it was perfect. Apparantly, my eyes dehydrate therefore the blood vessels thicken causing red eye but that cant be happening all the time. Im finding it very hard to do daily stuff. Any type of light also causes it to be red. Im so worried that its making me go abit mad in the mind. Im worried so much about it. I heard that indian medicine works better without side effects. Can someone please advise me. Iv read so many comments about how patients cant solve the problem. I also read somewhere that any sort of spray treatment cures the red eye for a short time. But when the medicine rubs off, it goes twice as red. I am soo worried.

gurmz: you need to go see a corneal/anterior segment specialist if you have not already.

Could my problem possibly be ocular rosacea?  I've read a little on the subject and the symptoms seem to match.  Whenever I get angry or upset my cheeks and nose turn bright red and feels warm, and I recently noticed that the red in my eye does get worse at these times.  The doctor said the the episcleritis has cleared up but the red is still there and now a different doctor is saying it is some kind of allergy.

gurms i seem to get really red eyes all the time say 320 out of 365 days in the year.

Im 17 soon and it makes me mad in the mind too. Self conscious ? Afraid what people will think? Hey does it get worse in summer or just all year? i hate my life sometimes lol oh well. not like anything is going to work for me. lemmego through the list. Patanol, opticrom, systane, prednisolone, some random sodium chromoglycate drops. Various anti histamine tablets. erm even ointments, lubricants. just give up with it all. im seeing an allergist soon, to get desensitised. lol a crock of B.S.
