Sneezing and Blood

This may sound strange but... recently, after a bad cold, I sneezed really hard and a tiny bit of blood came out of my eyes. Is this something that I can brush off?

Getting soft in my old age, didn't see that part, very very sorry, portishead. The blood coming out of the eye is somewhat disconcerting, although not emergent, better to get it checked out. If you were my patient, I would have you come in for an exam in the next week or so, or if it happens again... then I would consider this to be something to be checked sooner. So I agree with the optometrist who is the authority on this forum.

no no no no travel.

this patient has blood that she says came out of her eye when she sneezed.  a one time event of external adnexa blood.  no retinopathy, vitreous heme, etc etc etc.  did you even read the thread?

i do not think this is emergent.

This could be serious. The cause needs to be determined without undue delay. The causes for bleeding within or externally are numerous. This could be a vitreous hemorrhage, proliferative retinopathy, etc. You need an eye exam ASAP.

well i'm only 35 so i sure hope i'm not "retiring".  no i just closed my office when i got a lucrative job offer for another doc.  i wanst making much $$ anyway.

as for how long you can wait...i do not consider this a dangerous set of signs/symptoms.  if there's no VISION LOSS or pain, etc, then i personally dont think it sounds emergent.

Yes, it came out of my eye and would be visible on "tissue paper."

hmm.  what i suspect you are talking about is a subconjunctival hemorrhage, or broken blood vessel over the 'white' part of your eye.  known to be caused by sneezing, coughing, vomiting, etc.  if that were the case it would appear to you as being your eye.  no big deal.  very common.  for the most part benign.  although you probably need an exam to make sure thats what this actually is.

but the blood would not 'come out' of your eye.  if blood actually came out and was visible on say a tissue paper...that would be much, much more interesting/alarming.
