Under eye swelling in 8 week old infant.

by jian, Mar 10, 2007 12:00AM
My daughter of 8 weeks has swelling on her lower eye lid at the out side corner, on and off for 4 days now. It started with one eye. I consulted the Paed yesterday when only one eyw had the swelling and the doc suggested it is an insect bite. I wasn't sure about it but took it as an openion. But today her other eye has also swollen at the lower outer corner.
My MIL says it is due to cold, Is it possible?
At times there is no swelling.

i seriously doubt this is a bug bite.

much more likely IMO to be dacryocystitis:

really, really common in infants, especially young infants like your 8 week old.  usually no big deal.  usually does not require aggressive therapy...massage and antibiotic eyedrops usually do the trick.  babies usually grow out of this.  but if they dont, sometimes an ophthalmologist will recommend an in-office minor surgical procedure to kind of permanently fix the problem.

Appreciate your reply.
Went tro the URL provided by you, but her condition is totally different, sorry if I have nor described the symptom well.

The swelling is at the lower eyelid, below the eye towards the outer corner, not at the corner. When it swells it looks as though her lower eyelid is merged with the cheek. There is no ***** point or infection site.
Swelling goes away and comes back once ow twice the same day.
Pls reply.

Take your infant back to the doctor, if you feel the swelling is worsening or involves both eyes.  If the baby seems in pain, the swelling is severe, red, or hot to the touch--go today.

yeah consult a pediatric ophthalmologist as well.  pediatricians dont usually manage this stuff too well.

To: both of you
Thanx both of you. I have decided to takr her to doc today. There is no paed opthalmologist at the hospital where she is normally seen. I will go to a opthalmologist.
Thnx
