Uneven pupil dilation in infant

by miles2run, Jan 15, 2007 12:00AM
Our 10 week old son has uneven pupil dilation.  When in direct light, his left pupil is about 40-50% larger than the right pupil (i have a photo taken today that can be emailed if you'd like to look).  The smaller pupil does appears to dilate. We took him to ER upon noticing and they didn't seem to think it was a big deal at this time but to just keep a watch over this condition. However as a new mother, I am really concerned about it. What does this typically suggest?

not much.  the ER probably checked him for an afferrent pupillary defect, which they apparently didnt find or they'd have told you all about it and send him for more testing.  the fact that they didnt do that suggests to me that they think he had/has a serious eye or neurological condition.

regardless, you need to make an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist or some eye doc who sees a lot of kids.  its my experience that the ER and pediatricians generally dont know too much about this stuff.  they can rule out the major problems (tumor, etc) but as for actually diagnosing the problem, well they dont see it much.

could be many, many things causing uniocular pupil dilation.  some benign, some not.  only an eye doc can tell you what the deal is and whether you need to be worried.

he needs an eye exam

TYPO!

"the fact that they didnt do that suggests to me that they think he had/has a serious eye or neurological condition."

SHOULD READ:

"the fact that they didnt do that suggests to me that they **DO NOT** think he had/has a serious eye or neurological condition."

Hope you don't mind me asking.
I have exactly the same problem, My left pupil is mostly always larger than the right pupil, I suffer terribly with head aches and can only explain them like explosions which often wake me up during the night.

I was refered to a specialist who told me to sit on the bed and then proceeded to test the reflex's in my knee's, then asked about what pain medication I use.
I said that I trie not taking pain killers but sometimes have to take cocodomol (think thats how its spelled sorry) with out any futher tests he said I was addicted to the pain killers and said not to use them as thats what causes the pain.  I was then sent on my way totally confused because I do not take them with out the pain being unbearable.

That was two years ago and the symptoms are worse, now I tire easily, going to bed at 8pm and can easily sleep through till morning finding it hard to wake. I'm so worried its something more serious, the optition was worried enough to refere me to the specialist.

What should I do?
What could it be?

I'm sorry for butting in but feel so desperate and when I stumbled across this post I could not help myself.

Thx T
