Use of Multi-Focal IOL by Patient with Prior LASIK Surgery

I am considering a multi-focal IOL (probably Rezoom or Restore)for a left eye trauma related (childhood injury)cataract.  The cataract has only become an issue in the past 2 years or so. I had LASIK about 5 years ago.  I am told that the cornea change attributable to the prior LASIK surgery may affect the ability to accurately gauge the correction necessary in the IOL.  Any experiences on this?  I also am told that if we don't get it right the first time, we can go back in and replace the lens in order to more accurately correct for the LASIK retinal changes.  Thoughts?

The ReZoom or Restor lens does not correct astigmatism. That is done by your surgeon with limabl relaxing incision, astigmatic keratotomy or with a laser. They do that in order to give you the best possible outcomes for your lens implant.

Thank you for the additional contact of Dr. Sonntag here in Idaho.  I wanted to have more than just the one consultation my doctor set up for me.

I would still like feed back on the problem I have with astigmatism and whether the ReZoom or ReStore IOLs will correct that problem.  This is a wonderful forum and I appreciate the assistance.

I believe from a previous post that Dr. John is Dr. John Sontag (spelling) and that he does practice in Idaho.

I continue to research all I can find on the internet about cataract surgery and IOL options before my first appointment with surgeon's office staff on Tuesday 4/4/06. (I'm nervous about not actually meeting surgeon until day of surgery-he flies in on surgery days only. I assume all follow up care is done by local staff) My original doctor told me part of the vision problems I was having after Lasik was because I now had more astigmatism than before the Lasik. Didn't know that could happen. I found information on treating astigmatism with a Toric IOL on the internet.  Does anyone know anything more about these lenses?  I've read just about everything on this website but I don't think anyone has addressed how Rezoom or Restore work with astigmatism.  Maybe I'm just blind and didn't see it. I want to have every possible question available so as to know what to discuss with surgeon's staff optomestrist.

If you can get your records from the doctor that did LASIK )if the doctor you are seeing now is not the same doctor) that is most helpful to determine the implant power. There is more of a risk in getting it right, but it can be done. Just know that it might take an enhancement or IOL exchange or piggyback IOL if not right the first time

all of that is true.  having LASIK makes it harder to meausre the IOL power...but a good surgeon can usually estimate it really well anyway.

yes, the IOL can be replaced, but is not usually as easy.
