Vision Loss In Right Eye

Vision Loss In Right Eye

Hello.  Am a 47 year old male, experiencing vision loss in right
eye.  Have worn glasses since a very young age.  Right eye is definitely weaker, as confirmed by standard tests; however,
I have noticed recently when my hand passes over my left
eye while reading, letters on the page when viewed only
with my right eye appear to be only partly viewable,
as if the letters were printed in a much lighter
font or parts of each letter are missing.

In general, letters appear to be slightly sharper when reading
only with left eye, versus when both eyes are open.  Video, however, such as TV, seems fine when both eyes are open.

In short, there is blurriness & deteriorated vision in right eye when left eye is shut or covered.  Sometimes after waking up from sleep or long nap, both eyes will take twenty or thirty minutes to properly focus.

Same right eye was affected by Bell's Palsy from October 2004
through May 2005.  Right eye was kept taped shut - however,
when tape was finally removed, vision was o.k.

Am waiting for results of Visual Field Exam (insurance form
approving exam included phrase "cupping of optic disc").

In the meantime, am adjusting (10+ days) to multi-focals (i.e., blended or progressive).  Previous glasses were distance-only.

Do these symptoms generally continue to worsen, or do they
stabilize?  Can condition be treated with drops, or is
surgery required?  Even with both eyes uncovered, when
one eye is so much weaker would feelings of dizziness
be normal or should left eye learn to compensate for
right eye?

Thank you.

the dizziness is probably more related to your new progressives.  i doubt vision loss in one eye would cause dizziness.

if the visual loss is from the old bell's palsy...no one knows if your vision will "continue" to deteriorate or not.  totally unpredictable, and related to the amount of damage done during the palsy.  immeasurable, really.

unless you have raised intra-ocular pressure there is no surgical procedure for any of the symptoms/conditions you just listed.

there are some physicians who might treat a "deteriorating" and "cupping" eye with anti-glaucoma eyedrops, even in the absence of raised intraocular pressure.  this is definitely an "off-label" usage for those types of meds, and would be on a case-by-case basis, and would also vary among individual doctors.

Have you been to a retinal specialist?Your description of the vision distortion in your right eye may be a result of a retina detachment or hole in the macula. It could also be a symptom of an eye infection which would need antibiotic drops. Itcould be a lot of things. Your opthalmalogist can tell you what to do but you need a complete eye exam.Good luck anad I hope you can go this week!

I had a rezoom placed in my left eye on 5-11-06. I never got clear vision at any distance. My Doctor felt the lens might not be centered so he went back 4 weeks later and centered it. Still never got clear vision at any distance. My Doctor then decided that the lens was defective and changed the lens . It has been one week with the new lens and I still don't have clear vision. The vision is some what better up close but I still can't see a sentence clearly. I can't make out anything in a distance. I have one of the best Doctor in California so I'm confused as to the problem and I get it that he is confused as well. He has not said this but he did make a coment that he can't do anything else for the eye and he can't change the lens again. He thinks when we do the other eye it might help. I'm to afraid at this point to do the other eye. I'm 56 if age should make a differance.
