Wavy Vision then Migraine

by SLF, Jan 25, 2007 12:00AM
Over the last year I have had 4 migraines that start with wavy lines in my vision. The first 2 occurred within a month of each other (a little less than a year ago)and started with wavy lines in my vision for about 20 - 40 min. It is difficult to focus on any one thing and my peripheral is gone. The vision became better and the migraine set in. I saw an eye doctor and was diagnosed with astigmatism in my right eye and obtained eyeglasses. It's a year later and I have had 2 of these occurrences happen within 2 weeks of each other. This last one which happened yesterday worries me a lot. I had a sort of "pop" in my head that startled me and was slightly painful. The "pop" was around the side of my head above my ear. It happened during a yoga class. About 20 minutes later I was driving and the wavy vision occurred and lasted about 40 min in both eyes. When the vision became normal the migraine set in just like the other times. My head feels sore today where the "pop" occurred and my eyes very tired. I have a history of thyroid cancer, asthma, allergies and have had a lot of x-rays done as a child. I plan to see an optomologist very soon and would like some advice, thoughts, feedback...etc...on what this may be.

the visual problem sounds like ocular migraine or migraine aura...very common with migraines.  not particularly dangerous...but not really an "eye" problem.  its a neurological migraine problem.  fixable by the same methods as fixing the migraines...usually migraine medication.

dont know about the "pop".  many people with thyroid problems have weird sensations when their eyes move.  dont know.  could even be SINUS problems.  ethmoid sinus is very near your eyes...

Last week I noticed out of the corner of my left eye some wavy or blurry vision. Vision was ok straight ahead, just out of the corner was the problem.
It affected my reading.....letters seemed to run together...but was able to function otherwise.
Seemed like the area of the eye was dry.
Today it happened in my right eye.....again some blurriness out of the corner.......I use a wet towel to wipe my eyes (in case there was something in there).....the blurriness seemed to move to the top of the eye. About 5 to 10 minutes symptoms were gone.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
