"marcus-gunn jaw winking" or "maxillopalpebral synkinesis" is what thats called.  it is a VERY MILD congenital (so yes, from birth) neurological defect.  "crossed wiring".  somehow the nerves that control your jaw movement are connected in some way to the ones that control your eyelid movement.

it is no big deal.  it is not dangerous.  i do not think there is anything that can be done for it.  as far as i know there is no known treatment.

OMG- I can't believe I found this post AND it is recent! :-)
I have not found research online that describes this behavior. Most Marcus Gunn research describes the lid as lazy UNTIL jaw  moves THEN lid is raised.

My son SOLELY raises the eyelid VERY wide when chewing- not droop.

His opthamologist did not see the behavior- as my son was not eating anything during his eye appointment. I mentioned the behavior and he seemed to think that it was 'just my sons body'. Nothing to do about it. Everyone is different.
(I just found out about Marcus Gunn yesterday by  'stumbling' across a site)

His eye looks normal EXCEPT when chewing... then the lid raises REALLY high ( only right side) and his eye whites are very visible.

So far no children have teased him (age 7)
It is not something we want to deal with cosmetically at all as it isn't an issue. His vision is fine.

I am wondering if there is any other disease associated with this- that we should know about.
Early intervention is important to us. Our son is VERY healthy and has no signs of any health problems.
Just an expressive eye.

~thank you for any info

I (googled) read that the only procedure for this would be cutting (shortening) the levator muscle that lifts the lid.
Anyone know more?

Hi there!!!  My son has MGJWS.  He is now 21 months old.  We had the surgery last July to just lift his eyelid so it would not droop.  The surgery was somewhat sucessful... it was undercorrected which is common.  But hey feel free to email me, if you would like pics of before and after.
Check these out.

My son has MGJWS, he is 7 months old now and was diagnosed from about 1 month old. He also has moderate to severe Potosis. We have to patch his good eye 5 times a week to keep him from getting Amblyopia(a blind eye). We haven't been told wether or not he will have surgery at his young age. From what I have read, and there is not much to read, they normally operate around 3-5 years.

I have this eye disorder and I am 25 years old.  I have found that if I chew on the left side of my mouth my lid does not move.  It took me years to realize that.  Perhaps this may help your son.

I took my 1 year old son to the eye doctor today.  He too only shows signs of any problem when he ***** or chews.  His eyelid does not droop at all.  It simply raises when he drinks from his bottle.  He was diagnosed with Marcus Gunn Syndrome.  It is a relief to know there are others out there, but disheartening to learn that it will continue forever.  Thanks for the post that perhaps he can learn to chew on the other side.  We'll cross that bridge when we need to!
