lasik aftermath??

by eyewoes, Apr 20, 2006 12:00AM
Hi my question has to do with "floaters", or at least that's what i think i have, about 5 years ago i had lasik surgery, two on my left and one on my right my pre surgery contact prescription was a negetive 5.oo and 5.25, ever since then i have seen black vague floating "spots" which gets worse the brighter it is outside, my eye doctor says she can see "debris" in my eyes. and my PCP says that spots settle down after awhile, I am 27 and otherwise in good health, is this something that i will forever have to deal with, or is there some way to help this.... I really don't want to have surgery again, I hate the thought of messing with my eyes anymore considering when they did the surgery, it took them quite a bit of discussion on whether or not i had enough "tissue" for them to take out to make the surgery effective, but i was young and excited about the prospect of never having to wear contacts/glasses again.. which didn't end of being true i wear glasses now for driving because too little light gets through into my eyes now.

Thank you for your time and response

i'm sorry you're having trouble.

if they are floaters/debris, your PCP is right: generally they settle down and go away on their own in most people (a few are permanent)

the only surgical procedure that is widely performed for removal of floaters is a vitrectomy...a rather invasive procedure that is generally reserved for LARGE and permanent floaters.

before someone else posts this: there *is* a laser procedure for "dissipation" (not removal) of floters.  it is not recommended by most retinal surgeons b/c it does not remove floaters, it just breaks them up into many SMALLER floaters...
