myopia progression and age

by cyberguy, Jan 22, 2006 12:00AM
Hello,

I got myopic by the age of 17 and the power was -1D and now 1 am 18 and the power is -1.25D i am worried if my myopia will progress to a greater extent.

My questions are

1. At what age does myopia generally stabilize.
2. Does Heavy computer usage increase myopia
3. Does wearing a + power lens for near work reduce the progression  of myopia as pointed out on (http://www.preventmyopia.org/htmlanimation.html)
4. Does a myopic eye require special eye care.
5. Is there any way to improve my vision without surgery.

Please Help Me.

1st of all, -1.25 is a very minimal amount of myopia.  i mean its obviously significant to you, but certainly not a dangerous or concerning amount to any eye doctor.  to answer your questions:

1) myopia can change at any time, BUT it *usually* stabilizes in the patient's early 20's.

2) yes, heavy computer use can and does increase myopia in my opinion

3) yes, in my opinion wearing low plus can and does reduce myopia progression in some patients.  BUT!  this it hotly debated in our profession, and i guarantee you can find more than a few eye doctors who disagree with this stance.  i happen to agree with the link you posted.

4) yes, some myopic patients can require special care, but in my opinion not "low" myopes like you are.

5) YES.  accelerated orthokeratology.  look into it here:
