stress

I recently went to a second eye doctor and now both of them have said I do not have CSR. They both cannot see anything wrong with my eyes but to me they are dry, sore, burning, gritty and things far away are out of focus. Should i get a third opinion? Any idea on what could be causing this?

Have you been checked for keratoconus?

I had symptoms like you describe for years, and it took many eye doctors before I was diagnosed.

yes, keratoconus is also possible.  have you had a topography reading taken?  if not, make sure your 3rd opinion is at an office with a topographer.

Maybe. I have not been tested for dry eye. What exactly is keratoconus?

keratoconus is an inherited progressive corneal disease.  it causes thinning of the cornea over time.  it is not life threatening and usually not sight threatening if you live in a civilized country with access to health care.  it can however be a fairly life CHANGING condition.

most keratoconus patients (especially patients who have early or borderline keratoconus) complain of the same things you initially complained of:  blurry or distorted vision that some doctors cant figure out, dryness, discomfort or irritation that is difficult to describe, etc.

nowdays the the best way to diagnose an early case of keratoconus is with a computerized corneal topographer...a $30,000 machine that a lot of eye doctors dont have.

i can tell you right now that you do not have *advanced* keratoconus.  any eye doc on the planet can diagnose that with no special equipment, and your vision would be terrible right now.  *IF* you were to have keratoconus, it would be in the very early stages, and really only a computer topographer could catch it.

the treatment of keratoconus has had some major advances recently.  the 1st thing most eye docs try is rigid gas permeable contacts.  if those dont work at some point, now lots of corneal surgeons are going with INTACS, an implantable and removable plastic corneal insert.  last but not least if the cornea gets VERY THIN, some patients need a conreal transplant.
