swelling left eyelids

by Smita, Oct 13, 2005 12:00AM

Smita Chatterjee, 30 years, 5.7 inches, Weight: 74 Kg
Body condition: Normal. Vision 2.5 both eyes

Swelling in the upper eyelid and / or lower eyelid of the left eye. No problem in vision. No pain, no pus, no redness in eye. The swelling increases especially during sleeping time, when the eyes are closed. During the daytime, when the eyes are generally open, the swelling generally decreases but when ever I sleep or close my eyes for about half an hour, the eyes again swells.

This has been happening for almost a month and half. Initially, when under medication, the bulge decreased and was completely cured. Then, after one week or so, the symptoms relapsed.

Now, it’s not getting cured. During the daytime, it generally decreases a bit but again swells.

Treatment:

Doctor 1: Initially, an ophthalmologist diagnosed it as a case of allergic reaction. Gave anti allergy medication. The composition of the medicine is Mizolastine tablets (Indian trade name: Elina). The eyes drops given have the composition Tobramycin Sulphate Plus Flurometholone Opthalmic Suspension. The eye ointment has the composition of Tobramycin sulphate. It was cured and then again swelled after 2 weeks or so.

Doctor 2: Consulted another Opthalmologist. Gave the anti allergy of the composition of Chloramphenicol and Dexamethasone Sodium Phenyl Mercuric Nitrate.

The 2nd doctor asked to go for a thorough check-up as there may be some growth behind which is pushing the cornea outside and thus the eyelid bulging.

The problem however still persists. Please let me knw where prob is

I have had the same thing happen.  It only happens about every month and a half.  It can be either eye.  I still don't have an answer.

Hi , I too have suffered from the same symptoms for years.  I went to the doctor every time and they just said it was an allergic reaction to something I ate or drank w/in the last 24 hrs.  They would give my a steroid and an eyedrop w/steroid, too.  Ofcourse it would go away but continued to reoccur every month or so....Sometimes it may be two months but it occurs frequently...I don't know what causes it and I don't think the doctors know either....I have taken multiple allergy test and seen many doctors.  NO luck!  My recent episode was two days ago ...it starts w/my eye itching ....Always seems to happen when I am sleeping.  I can feel myself rubbing my eye until I jump up to look at it and see it is starting to form a hard swelling in the corner of either eye....If I go to sleep it continues to swell until my whole eyelid is swollen shut!!  It happens in either eye....I usually take a large amt of benadryl and try to stay awake until it goes a way...24-48 hours depending how swollen it got....After the swelling went down, my other eye began to swell the next night....Usually it only happens to one eye but sometimes both.  I have just learned to live w/it miseably because no doctors seem to help...they prescribe allergy meds and I take them every day and it still happens!!! It is very frustrating...you can't work, drive or even think, you feel so miserable....especially when I take benadryl...it makes me very drowsy...I have tried to do my own "research" but haven't had much luck....

Also, I did not start having allergy syptoms (symptoms) or eye swelling until I was in my twenties.  My eyes do not get red inside.  There is a lot of itching...sometimes it looks like a small bite.  Redness and a small bump....then it just keeps swelling.  It usually happens on the corner of my eye by my nose....sometimes you can see my cheeks swell, too, just under my eyes....no puss, discharge or crusty....One more thing, I did notice that everytime I drank White Zinfandel...my eye would swell....but just recently....I have had over the years and never had a problem...now I do...Hmmm
