vitreous detachment and continuing flashes

vitreous detachment and continuing flashes

hi, i am 22 yrs old, am high myopia -7.25 and -8.00, was diagnosed with vitreous detachment back in december. the retinal specialist said that my retinas were fine, no tears and no need to worry until maybe when i am around 40, i asked him if the flashes would stop and he said probably. i have been getting flashes since september of last year and have been having them for almost 8 months now and they have not stopped or seem to get any better. what i would like to know is, is this normal? and when can i excpet them to stop. i feel right now that i might have to have them for the rest of my life, which is scary because then wouldnt i have to worry constantly about gettign a tear?
also, the flashes occur spontaneously, but also almost every time right when i go from a light area to a dark one, for example when im in the room and right when i turn off the lights, it will flash in both eyes usually going from top down to the bottom in the periphery. it does not flash more than usual however once i am in the dark. i would like to know is there any explanation for this?
what can i expect for the future? i know i am quite young to have this, i feel so worried that what then might happen when i am like 80..thankyou for the reply.

i would not ever consider continuing flashes "normal".  but that being said, it is unlikely that you have developed a hole/tear/detachment since your dilated fundus exam 3 months ago.

"flashes" that occur from light to dark and dark to light are probably not the same type of "flashes" that occur from retinal problems.  we're probably talking about some sort of photophobia or entopic phenomenon.

this is all very tough...if you dont have retinal problems and you still have flashes: not much can be done about it.  there's nothing to "fix".  i have no idea if you'll have them for a short period of time or a long one.  all you can do is get dilated regularly and have someone look.

hello. I'm 24 with much less myopia, however i have the same problem with you, vitreous detachment. I have much more flashes during this period, although my eye doctor told me not to worry because retina is ok and go back in 1 year.I just want to tell you that i have more flashes now than before i noticed the vitreous detachment. Those flashes are instant, last only a second and i dont realize from which eye they come from. I have them maybe twice a day (not more) or somedays maybe not at all. I noticed that i started seeing blury from 1 eye, this is how i found out about VD. It was very annoying but after a weak it went away(maybe the jelly became more smooth. My doctor said that i see blury because the vitreous was like a curtain in front of my optic view. A few days ago i had 3 flashes and i started seeing blury again at the same eye but much less than the previous time so i guess the vitreous detached more. Since i have nothing else wrong (like many flashes-more than 2 a day ) or loss vision etc i will wait and see. generally i will be alert with those flashes but mine are instant as i told you. Dont't worry u r not the only one& my eye doc said that a few days ago a girl aged 7 had the same thing. I dont't know what kind of flashes u have, maybe they r something else. :)
