vitreous detachment

by kixikix, Mar 05, 2006 12:00AM
Hello. I am 24 y/o female. I used to have a lot of floaters, black spots etc and a few days ago my left eye was a bit blury. I went to the ophthalmologist and he did some eye test and looked in my eye and told me that a piece of the vitreous has been started to detaching, that is why i see a bit blury in front. I will go back to the doctor in 20 days. He said that apart from this, my both eyes(retina etc) look very healthy and the retina etc has no alteration. I want to ask: Is vitreous detachment dangerous to my eye? Does it mean that my retina will detach too? Will this blurness go away sometime? Will sometime the whole vitreous detach and is that serious? Is it possible that i feel a bit pressure in my eye(maybe it's my idea or because of some teeth problems i have).Thank u very much because i feel a bit nervous!(i forgot to mention that i have myopia).

vitreous detachment is VERY COMMON and most of the time totally benign.  is RARELY (very rarely!) causes retinal holes/tears/detachment, so we always watch it, but the vast majority of the time everything is fine.  yes, the blurry will eventually go away but it may take MONTHS.  if the whole vitreous detached it would not be a big deal.  no, vitreal detachment has NO FEELING.  the pressure you feel must be caused by something else like sinuses or teeth problems.

Hi, I had a vitreous detachment and it is painless like he said and it can take months to complete.  The symptoms of a retinal detachment usually include flashing lights, and sometimes a black curtain over part of the vision.  I also have some flashes with the vetreal detachment but not all the time as you would with a retinal detachment.  I am not an ophthalmologist, but this is what I was told when I asked this question.  Good Luck.

Hello! It's a fact that since 2 days now, the blurness has almost gone away!It still isn't like before but it is not annoying anymore! It was very uncomfortable especially when i read a book or watched tv.It seems that as the vitreous detached it created a piece of a "curtain" (not obscured curtain but blury)as the doctor said and now the jely has started to become more smooth. Im no more anxious and i'm glad that it happened in frond of the eye so that it was noticeable because now i will be more cautious and have regular(as needed)visits to the doctor!I have general eye symptoms that are probably due to the vitrous, myopia or other causes  like black spots, scotomas, floaters, flashing lights, warms on the sky etc and sometimes it's very annoying to look around at white walls (eg at my work). I guess having a retinal detachment will have symptoms that are more obvious and not just another floater or a flashing light! Thank you for your post :)

I would also like to add that i have vision snow. It starts at night under low ilumination. I have this a long time now, maybe it is relevant or irelevant to vitreous. I think it has to do with sleeping & rest too.
