I have another suggestion for you and your father.  It involves work on your part.  There is a wealth of information about your father's condition available online.  You will have to learn some new vocabulary, but I don't think that you'll find even the most technical papers to be incomprehensible.  You can use Google Scholar (and other search engines) to find a wealth of material, including the most recent research.  In addition, you can make contact with others to exchange information through message boards (for example, those run by the American Foundation for the Blind).

I have an uncommon macular condition, and the method I described above has worked extremely well for me for keeping up with the very latest research and possible treatment options.  I've received so much help and support through email correspondence with the authors of recent research papers as well as other people with my condition.  I really don't know what I would have done without the Internet.

Hi wahba1800, my grandmother has a similar condition to the one you described. We were also thinking about visiting the Barraquer Clinic. I'd like to know about your experience there.

Thanks

I forget where you are from, but i am extremely fond of my Baptist Eye Center Little Rock, Ark.  After 6 eye sugeries, my Dr.'s manage to get me back to 20/20 in both my eyes[with glasses].
They are fantastic Dr.'s. my Retinal specialist & associates are on 2nd floor.

If you live in/near a large metropolitan area, you can probably find a retinal surgeon with a special interest in myopic/macular degeneration who is listed in the Castle-Connolly directory of "best doctors."  (Try googling; there is a small fee for using this service.)  If you have the financial means and your insurance permits it, it might be worth doing a little travel.  I've been very satisfied with the Castle-Connolly doctors whom I've seen, although many excellent doctos are not listed.  If this is not possible, then see the senior staff member (not a resident or a fellow) at a nearby medical center that is associated with a medical school.
