new glasses causing son's headche?

by momoftwo74, Sep 16, 2008 12:03PM
Hi. My 8 year old son was recently diagnosed with myopia. The Ophthamologist did a very thorough examination (which included having my son's eyes dialated and also took images, as well as spending a good deal of time talking to my son while finding the right lenses for him). Without corrective lenses my son's vision is 20/100 -1, with his left eye being slightly worse than the other. We picked up his glasses last Friday. On the way home he was surprised at how he could read the words on distant signs ( he said he hadnt even realized that he couldnt see far away well, and had never complained). My son doesnt seem to mind wearing the glasses. He does ask to take them off sometimes when he is reading close up etc. His doctor says that it is ok for him to take them off to read, but to let my son dictate that. He went to school yesterday (Monday), and wore the glasses all day. He was home for about 15 minutes and I noticed him rubbing the center of his forehead. When I asked him he said that his head hurt, just in the middle of his forehead. I asked him if the pain was mild and he said, it hurt just a little sometimes but would throb worse for a few minutes before easing off a little. He said that the headache began about an hour before he came home (2:00 in the afternoon or so). Yesterday was the first day that he wore the glasses all day. My son is not normally prone to headaches. Is this normal for a child to get headaches when he first starts to wear glasses? It seemed like the doc got the prescription right but could that possibly be the problem? Hopefully yesterday's headache was an isolated event, and maybe he wont have one when he gets home today. If a doctor or anyone else in this forum has any input or advice for me, it would be much appreciated.

It's common for some eyebrow pain/headache following a change in prescription.  Your son might want to gradually increase his wear time of glasses each day to see if that prevents headache.

Yes I have heard that headaches can happen for people who have had their prescriptions changed. Since this is my son's first prescription glasses, I'm kind of in the dark about what to expect. Today he hasnt complained at all, Im hoping that it was just a one day thing. Thanks for your advice.

If the problem persists call your ophthalmologist and discuss it with the staff. Sometimes a "glasses recheck" will be rescheduled (many offices do this without charge) to be sure the glasses are ground correctly and fitting well.
