2 year old with astigmatism

hello i just went to the doctor today and my the doctor said my son has astigmatism and needs glasses. His eye prescription was in the right eye a .50 and in the left its 2.00. The doctor made it seem like we caught it real early but when i found out a 0 means a perfect sight a 2.00 doesn't seem like early to me, is it? He also said the glasses may fix it, if this is true how long would it take to cure something like this? Are we talking about months, years? or will it never be cured to the point he doesn't need glasses? I myself have glasses so when i found out he needs them i was just so upset. I have been reading up about astigmatism but still new to all of this.

The real problem is the difference.  She may need glasses for a long time or the rest of her life.  Follow-up with the doctor is important.
