4 year old newly diagnosed with severe farsightedness

Hi. My son was recently diagnosed with farsightedness - +6.00 in left eye and +6.75 in right eye. I'm wondering if I can trust the accuracy of this diagnosis. He doesn't have any problems with fine motor skills or seeing things I point out to him. I had no idea he was having trouble seeing until this past summer when his eyes seemed to cross now and then ( which is why I took him to the optometrist). I asked the optometrist about this when they said he needed glasses and she told me that since he's always seen poorly he wouldn't know any different and therefor wouldn't complain. He wears his glasses without a fight and when they slip down on his nose he tilts his head back so he can look through the glasses rather than look over them.... so I guess they help some at least. He does complain that he can't see when he has a patch on his good eye. When I first put it on he held my hand and wouldn't let go - like he was scared. (sorry for rambling) I'm so new at this. I want to make sure I'm asking the right questions so I can better understand what's happening with my son. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

This is my professional opinion. Your child has a major eye problem that could cause amblyopia or strabismus. He should not be under the care of a non-physician, non-MD, limited scope practioner optometrist.

Your child deserves the best care and that would be by a Eye MD physician-ophthalmologist. Perhaps even a pediatric ophthalmologist.  Change "doctors" now. Find and Eye MD at www.aao.org

Are you in Toronto?

Hospital for Sick Children has a really good eye clinic.  I am an adult but I see a strabismus speicialist there as I had it since i was born.  I don't know if i'm allowed to post names here.  But he is very well known.  YOu can have your family Dr. refer you to him.
