AEDs-blurred vision

I was wondering if anti-seizures medication can cause lasting damage to eyes. I'm currently on dilantin and am worried because my vision has been very blurry while reading and more recently while watching TV and they get tired realy easy. I know blurred vision is a posible sife effect of this medication but I'm worried about how my vision is declining. Than-you for your help. Amy

Thank you for your question.  Dilantin can cause blurred vision, but this is more likely to occur when levels in the blood are high.  These levels should be monitored regularly by your neurologist.  The blurred vision caused by Dilantin is reversible with adjusting the dosage.  This drug is not likely to cause any permanent eye or visual problem.  If fact your symptoms may be related to a change in your refraction.  I recommend that you see an ophthalmologist for a complete eye examination.  Realize that Dilantin is the most common prescribed antiseizure medication and most people tolerate this without significant side effects.
