BRVO

70 yr old white male, no previous surgeries except cataract in left eye 2 yrs ago and a skin cancer removal, no prescription meds, no health problems....3-4 mos ago vision abruptly diminished/went cloudy in right eye. D.O. referred to opthamologist, exam revealed BRVO, referred to retinologist.  Saw yesterday.  Eye angiogram revealed BRVO, no macular degeneration, vision was 20/80 in that eye, eye pressure was 15.    Opthamologist and many friends had advised laser was quick and easy.   Retinologist said it's only successful 30% of the time and while it would be coved by Medicare, he thought should be apart of his study with new drug lucentis for 12-13 mos.  Eye INJECTIONS, monthly visits, might be getting drug or might get placebo and if after 6 mos no improvement then they could do laser.     Research IS important BUT wanting correction of the problem not treatment of a symptom or to be a "lab rat"
Can you suggest someone who's NOT be funded by a major drug company to make guinea pigs out of patients in the Kansas City metro area   ????

You're welcome. Be sure to tell Dr. Stout of your concerns about "experimental" medications, travel and costs.

Yes Go Mizzou, we will need it against OU tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your input and referrals.  Both of you!
As I said, I agree research is important but I cannot drive 200+ miles each time to fit the protocol with a minimum of once a month trips and I am not retired so have my job commitments as well.
Not to mention, just the thought of an injection into the eye not once but possibly 12-13 times...no, thank you.  And might not even be once getting the lucentis or avastin, might just be the placebo.   So....
Reading too much to believe the laser treatment is only 30% successful as the dr. in Wichita reported.   So would not trust him to do the procedure.
Actually did call Dr Dyer's office yesterday and they said they are trying to get into this study.  So, will certainly contact Dr Stout and Dr. Denning.   Had not come across their names in my research thus far.  Again, thank you!
Knew a Mizzou Tiger would be of great assistance!!!!   Go Tigers!

Hello Flipper, I practice in Kansas City at Discover Vision Centers, the largest group in KC and one of the largest private groups in the country. We have two excellent retina ophthalmologists: Drs Tim Stout and Dr. Doug Denning.

Other excellent retina groups in Kansas City:

Dr. David Dyer and Associates (main office is in KC North) and Dr. William Rosenthal (next to St. Luke's Hospital on the plaza).

I think any of these individuals can render the highest possible care and I would be comfortable with any of them taking care of me and my family.

I second what Dr. Kutryb said that many people benefit from medical research treatments and literally fight to be in a drug study and it is only by scientific studies such as this that progress is made.

I can understand your point of view.  If you're uncomfortable with the situaton - you should  get a second opinion.  Don't wait too long, though.  I hope you can put the lab rat feelings behind - remember many of the wonderful and life changing medical treatments we have were developed using similar type studies.  I wish you the best possible recovery from  your BRVO.  Sorry, I don't know any retinal specialists in KC, but I'm sure there are several great ones.
