Bad distance vision even after distance lense implanted in one eye

Bad distance vision even after distance lense implanted in one eye

I had cataract surgery about 5 years ago. The surgeon implanted a distance lense in my left eye and a near-sighted lens in my right eye for reading. (It turns out that the actual surgery caused my right eye to be astigmatized so I now need reading glasses.)
Now, when I drive I cannot read signs unless I am almost right up close to them.
In addition, when I am on a training course, I can't read the screen at the front of the room unless I'm in the front row.
I can't see actors properly when I go to the theatre, but this is a minor problem.

When I had the surgery, I was told that I would sill be able to see distance and be able to drive etc. But now it seems that I can't.

I'm not sure if this is something I have only noticed recently, or if my sight has deteriorated over the last few years.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Will I now need glasses for distance, as well as for reading?
I thought that with monovision I would never need glasses at all?

IOL power selection for monovision is not an exact science and does not correct astigmatism at any distance.  At best, monovision provides functional vision at distance, intermediate and near without glasses.  If you can't read road signs when you drive, it's definitely time for an eye exam.

These are the likely possibilities--see your Eye MD to see which it is:

1. You have developed a disease of the macular or optic nerve or retina.
2. You now need glasses for distance.
3.  The membrane behind the IOL has turned cloudy (seconday cataract or posterior capsular opacification) and you need a YAG laser capsulotomy.

See your EYE MD SOON.
