Blue patches in whites of eyes

My 2y.o son has these bluish spots in the whites of both eyes - one in each eye. He was actually born with it, and to best of our knowledge they haven't changed or grown any bigger. They are light-blue patches and are not very big, though it is slightly bigger in one eye than the other eye. We thought it was just a "birthmark" in the eye, but after googling about nevus in the eye, we are concerned that it might be something worse. What could this possibly be? Please advise. And thanks in advance.

Dear arunks,

There can sometimes be a bluish color to the sclera in infants.  I would recommend that you have your son checked by an eye MD.  Blue sclera may occur in a condition known as osteogenesis imperfecta in which one’s bones are brittle and fracture easily.  It may also occur in conditions which thin the sclera or corticosteroid therapy.
