Blurred eyesight after Pterygium Surgery

G'day

I am a 37 year old male from Australia.

I had surgery to remove a ptyerigium in my left eye using conjunctival autograft exactly a week ago. Since removing the eye patch the day after the surgery, my vision in the operated eye has been very blurred. I am very concerned as I had 20/20 vision prior to the surgery and now I cannot make out anything except very large bold text.

I saw my eye surgeon today for my weekly review. I expressed my concern and he did seem surprised that my vision was poor when compared to my usual good vision prior to the surgery. However, he explain the cornea was still healing and he was confident my vision would improve in the next four weeks. My eye surgeon conducted his checks and he was happy with the graft and the eye in general and he ruled out other conditions.

Having read some past threads on this forum and other articles on this matter on the open domain, I understand that blurred vision after the surgery is not uncommon but there is steady improvement over time as the eye surface heals.

My question is: How often does this type of blurry vision occur in Pterygium removal patients. Do they generally improve over time. How many make a full recovery.

Can I expect my focus/eyesight to to at least partially improve in the coming weeks.

Any response, information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

pb

Thanks so much, I have been scared if I will remain like this, prior to the surgery I use to see clearly, my doctor is surprised I can't see clearly now, I have told him I have confidence I will see clearly again. I have never had a problem with my vision. Thanks again. I hope I will improve, did you had to use additional drops? or you just waited and it returned. Thank you for your reply I actually thought I won't get a response since it's been since 2009.

No worries. The only drops where the ones initially prescribed. I believed what helped was resuming a normal pattern of life including mild exercise.

My doctor was surprised as well. After a while, he sent me to an optometrist to get glasses but by the time I made the appointment things started to improve.

I emphasize with you. I truly hope it goes well.

Dear Canth77,

My condition took 3-4 month to resolve. It returned to normal and my vision is fine. It just took time. I hope your situation improves.

Kind regards,

Bert
Canth77 What happened did your vision come back? I had the same procedure in Feb 2022 and as of today March 20th 2022 My left eye is still blurry, its extremely frustrating. Hoping it comes back.

Dear Craigus,

I can't thank you enough for relating your experience with me and also for your advice. It has given me much reassurance.

Although every case is different, it's great to know you made a full recovery and in time, I hope to do the same.

Again, thank you.

Bert

It took 2-3 weeks for my vision to correct itself and go back to being what it was before surgery. It's now better than my right eye once again. I know the feeling you have right now but from my experience you should just do your best to keep it clean, follow your prescribed post surgery medication drops, (i had prednefrin forte every 2 hours while awake) and finally do your best to be patient while it heals! If in doubt, don't hesitate to call your practice and ask them for more professional reassurance. If you like i can send you some photos of my eye taken weekly after getting my excision so you can see the transition/improvement.

Every pterigium is different.  You  will have to ask your surgeon.
