Burning Red Eye

My boyfriend woke up in the middle of the night with a burning sensation in his eye. He used eye drops, but it continued to be red. Still, after a day, his eye is still red and burning. Anyone know what it could be?

Too little information. What kind of drops?

He should see an ophthalmologist.

He used Clear Eyes. Your typical over the counter eye drops. I know he needs to go see an ophthalmologist, but he hates going. I just wanted to get an idea of what it could be so I can tell him. At the moment he's not taking it too seriously.
