Calcification of IOLs

by Glad4Help, Jun 30, 2009 02:41PM
I am scheduled for cataract surgery next week.  My doctor uses the Akreos aspheric  lenses, which are hydrophilic acrylic.

I have come across articles about IOL calcification in hydrophilic acrylic lenses.

Does calcification cause significant problems?  Has this problem been mitigated in the latest generation of the Akreos?  Which lenses would be safer?  Tecnis, maybe??

I can’t find much recent documentation.  Can anyone tell me what is the latest research on this issue?  I wonder what the current odds are that this would happen, or if it is not worth worrying about.

Dear Glad4help,

It is good that you asking questions before your cataract surgery.  I have not had experience with the Akreos, but is an aspheric lens approved by the FDA for use in the U.S.

I'm sorry I can't give you information on this as I  will untimately be scheduled for cataract surgery myself as a result of a vitrectomy, but I am extremely interested in what you find out. I did find a website which discussed many of the new lenses available, some of them even offer multiple focus and one for halos, contrast problems, and poor night vision which I suffer from. I am a skiier and somtimes in flat light I have to get off the mountain.
