Cataract surgery

I have just been told that I have a cataract in my right eye that will require surgery.   I am only 35 and a mom of two active young boys. I want to make the best decision for me.  My ophthalmologist said it is personal preference as to whether my vision will be clear for close up or distance.  What are the pros and cons for each?

Also, I currently wear glasses full time. I was considering laser/corrective surgery prior to this diagnosis. After my cataract surgery would I only need corrective surgery in my left eye?  Does one surgery effect the decision regarding the other?

The ophthalmologist office was a very business place and so he didn't have time to really walk me through everything. I really want to make an informs decision and information is greatly appreciated.

Here is the link to Dr. Hagan's article referenced by Dr. Oyakawa above.  It is very helpful and I suggest you read it carefully as a starting point to make your decision.

http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/841991/Consider-ALL-the-Options-Before-Your-Cataract-Surgery-Working-Through-Whats-Best-For-You

After you read through the article, feel free to ask questions in the Eye Care forum related to specific aspects of the surgery. As Dr. Oyakawa mentioned, the Search function on MedHelp can also assist you in reading about other patients' experiences with aspects of cataract surgery.

Just type your search topic in the box in the upper right corner and search.  There are many discussions about cataract surgery on this forum.  I hope you find it helpful.

If you do have specific questions for the participants in the forum, be sure to include any relevant info about yourself such as your current eyeglass prescription and any history of eye health issues or eye procedures.  Some eye health issues (such as high myopia or strong astigmatism) may affect the choices you make for the surgery.
