Charged too much

Had cataract surgery recently and paid an extra $6,000 for the Restore multifocal lenses. The itemized bill from the surgical center reflects lens cost $775 for one eye and another $775 for the other eye with a reimbursement from the surgeon to the center for both lenses a total of &1,550. Why the discrepancy in cost I am paying the surgeon $3,000 per lens. The way I figure either a mistake was made with the implanted lenses or there is a huge markup on what the surgweon charged and the true cost of the lens. Your comment would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

It is the responsibility of your surgeons' office  to explain all your options for surgery and if you choose, the extra cost for this premium implant and it is your responsibility to listen and sign the consents and write the checks for this completely elective surgery.  Apparently there was some lack of communication.  Please take this issue up with the surgeon's office.

The additional charges for a "premium" IOL are customary and justified by the additional "chair time" assumed to be required for implanting a multifocal lens.  Yes, this makes premium IOLs profitable for the surgeon.  You don't say whether you are satisfied with your ReStor vision.  If you are happy, then consider yourself lucky and enjoy your freedom from glasses.  You'll find many posts on this forum from people who were so unhappy with their multifocal lenses that they paid again to have them explanted and replaced.
