Contact Lenses

by Mikecennova, Jul 04, 2007 05:02PM
I have a glasses prescription and was told by my optometrist it was a simple conversion for contacts. I have been wearing contact for years and just had a new exam done so I have a new prescription for glasses and was given a trial pair of two week wear contacts to wear which have been great, but my optomitrist has gone on vacation and will not be able to see me for weeks.
Can some one covert my glasses prescription to contact prescription?

This is what is on my prscription slip:

OD  -3.75 CYLINDER:  -.50   AXIS: 100   ADD: +2.00
OS  -3.25 CYLINDER:           AXIS:         ADD: +2.00

The  information from your optometrist is wrong. The prescription for your contacts cannot be determined from your glasses prescription. It doesn't even tell whether you wear hard, soft, gas permeable, toric or bifocal contact or whether use use monovison, or disposable or extended wear contact lens.

Surely there must be someone at the optometrist's office that will pull your chart and see what type you were given. If you were happy with them they may be able to order some more from your chart. An alternative would be to go back to your old contacts until the optometrist returns. Not many professionals shut down their practices without making plans for the inevitable problems that arise.

Your question implies that you were given two week disposable soft contacts. To replace these you could use the information on the pack the contacts where in when given to you.

If you have trials, then a contact lens prescription has yet to be finalized. Once you go through wearing the trial lenses successfully, your optometrist will determine the contact lens prescription.

The contact lens prescription IS derived from glasses prescription. The optometrist does that. The eye glass prescription is the starting point for the contact lens Rx. The curvature of the cornea, tear layer and the need for any bifocal is takien into consideration. The OD will write down the final Rx for contacts once you go back for the contact lens follow up. If you have problems with the trial contacts, wear glasses. He did give you a Rx for glasses.
