Corneal abrasion

Corneal abrasion

50 years ago I suffered a direct hit on the eyeball that caused a corneal abrasion.  At that time I suffered from monocular diplopia for several months.  Recently I have had the same problem and been to a number of eye doctors.  They all comment on the corneal abrasion that I have.  Does the cornea ever heal?  Is it possible my recent problems are associated with an accident that happened 50 years ago?  Doctors have no definitive answer on the monocular diplopia.

A corneal scar could be the cause sometimes but it doesn't make sense that it went away for so many years and then came back again.  Monocular diplopia is usually due to some process within the involved eyeball and not the brain or optic nerve.  You should consider seeing a cornea specialist to see if they think it is from the old scar.  If that specialist doesn't think so, then see a neuro-ophthalmologist.  The other possibility is that you are developing recurrent erosions/abrasions for which you should also  be seeing a cornea specialist.
