Corneal scarring

Corneal scarring

I have recently been to the Dr to remove a sliver of metal from the center (dead center) of my left cornea.  The piece was removed but I was advised there was also rust that had to be removed by, essentially drilling or grinding it out.  According to the Dr it all came out and my vision is much improved since I couldnt focus on anything prior... My question is:
How well will this heal? and How long will it take?  I am concerned due to the Dr's comment "It couldn't be in a worse location"... I do alot of shooting/hunting with guns and archery, and that eye is my "dominant eye" for sighting.

Usually, most corneal foreign body injuries from small pieces of metal with or without rust rings will eventually heal in almost back to normal even if it is in the dead center.  Occasionally a significant scar can occur though, but I would think your doctor would have told you if that was the case.  The only way to know about your case is to ask your doctor.  A corneal topography can be extremely useful in telling if a scar will cause problems with irregular astigmatism and the slit lam exam can tell if there is any clouding of the cornea which could reduce your vision.  Most often these small injuries will not leave a scar big enough to reduce vision - but each case is different.
