Crystalens HD vs Crystalens 50 vs Technis Monofocal

I am having cataract surgery on my right eye on Feb 8th. I am trying to decide between the three lenses named. I don't mind about the extra cost if the results are good.  I wear lined bifocals now and am told with glasses I am 20/50 right eye and 20/25 in left. I have big issues with my glasses withhalos and glare in night driving and when I had the eye exam prior tosugery and a bright light was put on my eyes I could not read letters.. I use a laptop computer a lot and have trouble reading labels on store shelves. Distance in right eye is definitely worse than left eye.  I have read the article on "Disportionate Numberr of Complaints on IOLs" and see that Crystalens HD is one of the so-called "premiumlenses" with complaints.  Any feeback would be  appreciated.

Hi Dani,

Everyones eyes are different "so it is not one size fits all".  I had a Restor explant and the Tenics Apheric monofocal exchanged on left eye.  I had it set for distance.  I was so vey happy with the results that I went ahead and had the right eye done with a slight distance increase. The results are terrific.  I see great distance and my night vision is excellent, no halos or horrrible light glare. I can drive without glasses and see the car"s instrument panel.   I can shop and use the computer.  When I wake up in the morning I can see the clock!  I do not need glasses. I only need glasses for small print.(newspaper, package instructions).

And I agree with you, and as far as my experience,  definitely stay away from the multifocal.

These excellent Tecnis Monofocal lenes were paid for by my iinsurance.  No out of pocket expense. Go on to the Tecnis website.  They have an excellent video.

Check with your eye profession for what monofocal he/she thinks would be good for you.

Good luck.

Dr O.  Thanks for your feeback.  I am losing sleep over this decision so  your professional opinion is greatly appreciated.  I did not know anything about the Technis so that info is especially important to me. I knew there was a CL AO and that it is new so did not think many would know how it works implanted.  You have indicated it is as good as your cataract free eye. I don't know if my doctor has the CL AO but will find out.  I imagine it is even more costly than the HD.  According to your outcome, Near is still a problem with any CL.  Am told I have a "little bit" of astigmatism but not a problem.  I don't know what a "little bit" is and whether THAT would be a problem with the CL AO. I AM DEFINITELY STAYING AWAY FROM MULTI-FOCALS.

The Crystalens is a very good lens with less glare and halo complaints compared to multifocal IOLs.   The HD is very sensitive to residual astigmatism.   The Crystalens AO has been approved as of the first of the year.  It is the same as the AT50 except it has apheric optics.  I have the AT50AO in my eye and the quality of vision is the same as my other eye which does not have a cataract.  The Tecnis multifocal has very good near and distance vision and intermediate is not as good.  It also has more glare and halos at night due to its multifocal optics.  Also,  it is a diffractive IOL and  has some loss of light.  The Crystalens has the best distance and intermediate.  Near is not as good.

Dr. O.
