Detached Retina again after three surgeries

Detached Retina again after three surgeries

I have had three surgeries for detached retina since March 09.  All surgeries were laser surgeries and each time after a period of four to six weeks scar tissue would grow and cause the detachment.

The last surgery conducted oin Septmeber 09, the scar tissue was removed, sclara band placed aroung the eye and the retina was welded back via laser and two types of silicone oils were also placed in the eye to assist in holding the retina in place.  My last visit a couple days ago showed the retina detached again.

Is there any solution that can be injected into the eye to preclude scar tissue from growing?

Is there another procedure for welding the retina in place other than laser?

I do not want to give up on this and loose my sight!

Any help is appreciated.

Make sure you are seeing an excellent, board-certified retinal specialist ophthalmologist.  Once you get into this cycle with scarring and persistant detachement requiring silicone oil and a scleral buckle, you are getting into a very, very serious situation with a guarded prognosis at best.  Surgically, there is only laser and cryo (liquid nitrogen) treatments to try to seal the retinal down.  In the operating room, the surgeon uses primarily endolaser (right inside the eye) to help try to keep the retina attached in certain areas.  Make sure you are seeing the very best retinal specialist in your area since surgical skill means a great deal in this situation.  Ask your surgeon if he thinks there are any oral pills that may be able to reduce scarring and fibrosis.  There is at least on oral treatment but it is only for select cases and still a bit controversial.
