Detached retinas

Detached retinas

I just turned 58 years old, and have been active and healthy most of my life.
Two and a half years ago, my right retina detached spontaneously, with no apperent cause. In the following months I had numerous surgical repairs, and am now blind in that eye.
Thirteen months later, my left retina detached, again spontaneously, and I again underwent numerous surgical repairs, with three different, very highly regarded surgeons at extremely reputable hospitals.
I am now legally blind in that eye, cannot work or drive, and receive Social Security disability.
Now for the question. I am not diabetic, have a limited family history of detached retinas, and have never suffered any head injuries or concussions, and am as puzzled as all of my doctors as to the cause of my problems.
However, in 1996 I was diagnosed with ca of the prostate, had nerve-sparing surgery with a great surgeon, and went on with life  remaining nearly normal, until my eye problems.
Though all of my plumbing functioned well, my doctor prescribed Viagra with the intent of maintaining as much sexual function as possible for my wife and I.
Only recently I have noted on television commercials for Viagra and similar products the warning to stop using them and see your doctor if any vision problems occur. Naturally my laymans mind began to ponder the possibility that there might be some connection between my use of this drug and my subsequent eye difficulties. I have not used Viagra at all since the second detachment, but am wondering if you have any knowledge or thoughts on possible connections.
Thanks in advance for your time.

My understanding is that the viagra can affect the biochemical reactions in the cones (color vision receptors in the retina) and alter your color vision.  It can also lead to systemic vascular dilation which could have a blood pressure lowering effect expecially if nitrates are also being taken.  I don't see how the medication itself would lead to a detached retina but I will keep a lookout for any more reports.

the medicine does not cause retinal detachments. The main concern with this medicine is glaucoma.
