Tecnis aspheric monofocal or AcrySof IQ aspheric monofocal. Which is better?
Both the silicone and the acrylic versions of the Tecnis aspheric IOL are made with high-quality materials, and both are excellent IOLs. I suspect that both provide equally good vision. (If you haven't already seen it, check out the patient education video at www tecnisiol com.) Some cataract surgeons have a preference for one material or the other, based on their past experience. (The acrylic and silicone used in older model IOLs are different from the materials used in newer IOLs like the Tecnis.)
Some (but certainly not all) retinal specialists prefer that their patients get acrylic IOLs. This is because silicone oil (which is sometimes used during retinal surgery) can adhere to a silicone IOL, preventing the surgeon from visualizing the retina. If you have questions or concerns, you should discuss them with your father's cataract surgeon.
Sir,
I overlooked your comment, "Having a silicone IOL in one eye does not preclude getting a IOL of acrylic or other material in the other eye. " We would like to know why, in general a Doctor would choose Silicone over Acrylic, or vice versa (for someone with normal pupil size)
Thank you for that clarification about the silicone lens being aspheric.
Please allow me to rephrase my questions:
1. What is the difference between TECNIS Acrylic and TECHNIS Silicone monofocal IOLs?
2. Can a TECNIS Acrylic be interchanged with TECNIS Silicone?
3. Since my father already received TECNIS silicone in his left eye, should he receive a TECNIS silicone in his right eye?
Do note, my father plans on seeing the same surgeon. After he received the first cataract surgery on his left eye, his vision in his left eye greatly improved. I value all your guidance based on your personal knowledge and experiences
Also, I'm emailing TECNIS, and hopefully we will be knowledgeable for his consultation later this week.
Thank you in advance
Tecnis monofocal IOLs are made of both acrylic and silicone. Both are aspheric lenses.
To review the material and diminisions of the Tecnis IOL go to their website
Having a silicone IOL in one eye does not preclude getting a IOL of acrylic or other material in the other eye.
I can't answer your question about costs.
