Distance only or "blended" iols

Distance only or "blended" iols

I’m having cataract surgery in June.  I decided to get aspheric monofocal lenses (thank you forum!).  Now I’m trying to decide whether to get distance lenses in both eyes, or an intermediate/distance “blended vision” combo.  I got a pair of temporary glasses made to simulate the blended vision, and I adjusted quickly.  HOWEVER, when I thought about my vision needs, I realized that I would have to wear glasses most of the time anyway.  When I do photography, I need distance vision for the viewfinder, and close vision for the camera settings.  When I watch tv or use the computer, I also need close vision for reading.  So, I’m thinking that I might as well just get distance iols in both eyes, and just continue to wear progressive lenses (I have worn progressives for years).  What do you experts think of my reasoning?  Am I missing anything?

You might try full monovision with contacts to see if it works for you.  This would have been my first choice (if I didn't have a history of strabismus).  If you do "blended vision", you could still use progressive glasses for activities involving near vision.  But you would not need to depend on glasses for many social activities.  If you don't mind wearing glasses all the time, either distance/distance or distance/intermediate would work fine.

Modiefied monovision -0.25 and -1.25  works well because there are some things you will want to do without glasses men shave, women put on make up that will be difficult with both eyes set for distance. If I were having cataract surgery I would opt for modified monovision.

Hi,
I have just had my left dominant eye operated ...I am 43 and was -19 ..I am now about even ' 0' or a touch on the plus side.....I truly wish I had what Dr Hagan has suggested....as at moment my watch is very blurry as is computer screen...and so need readers for both...and this is my main requirement...driving i would have put up with glasses and would have been fine...now I need glasses for both scenarios...so think carefully about what you require your vision for mostly ...closeup or distance and than decide....you could even go for -0.5 and -1.5 and this may work quite well...but definitely go for blended vision...you only get one chance so get it rgt in first place...Read my latest posts and kind advice from Dr Hagan...hope it helps....Good Luck

Both of my eyes are plano with IOLs.  Without correction I can see my watch and read the dashboard, and (with squinting) read most restaurant menus and my computer screen.  I use a magnifying mirror to put on makeup/insert contacts.  I agree with Dr. Hagan's advice (above)--"blended vision" is more versatile.  But progressive glasses will give you excellent vision at all distances with either a distance/distance or distance/intermediate correction.
