Dr. Hagan Please read.

Let me try this question again.  I posted this last night and believe the doctor did not read my question thoroughly.  I do realize that progressive lenses are hard to fit.  What I am asking is:  is it possible to have mid range distance lenses made ,  that I can use for 18 - 24 inches away from my eyesight.  For using in situations such as :  sewing,  reading recipes,  looking at prices in a grocery store.  I know it sounds ridiculous,  but to not be able to focus on things such as those,  is so annoying.   Would I need a complete exam again,  this is  getting very costly,  or could an optician read my prescription and make lenses for me as to what I specify?  1 - 2 feet distance vision.   That is my question.   Or will my eyes adjust to this new set of glasses and be able to focus using these at the 1-2 feet distance ?
Thank you again.

You were able to help me  with questions a few months ago.  I’d like to ask you a few more.  I wear progressive lenses, but only can  see well through the distance and mid range of the lenses.  I am told I have a convergence disorder.   When looking downward to read I am unable to focus on the reading part of the lenses because my eyes feel as though they cross.   I wear the Varilux for distance and use reading glasses for close up work.  Today,  I got my  new  pair of reading glasses with a newer prescription.  These are fine and I like them a lot but only for reading.  They are perfect at about 14 inches from my eyes.   I do know that a prism was put into a lens . (Do those really help?)
But, when I go to use my laptop for reading or do my handi work such as sewing, which is about 18 - 24 inches or so away from my eyes, everything is extremely blurred with my new reading  lenses.   Would I be able to have glasses made so I could  use them at more of an arm’s length distance?  And if so, would I need to go through an entire eye exam once again?  Or could the optician read my prescription and have a pair made that are not quite as strong as my readers ?.  Or, do you think that my eyes  will adjust to the  new pair I got today  and in a few weeks be able to focus with my new ones at arm’s length as well as they do now for reading .  I cannot buy  reading glasses sold at department stores because I have astigmatism.    These definitely are great for reading, but that is it.  And I rarely read things that close such as books anymore, I mostly want to be able to see things such as my computer , and other things like   today I was trying to read   a recipe   and there was no way I could see it clearly  because the cookbook  was on the kitchen table, farther away than the usual reading field.   Do you have any suggestions?  This is so frustrating.
Thank you for your time.

No you would not need to have a re exam. The type of glasses you are describing are called variously: shopping glasses, computer glasses, music glasses.

What is done is the distance (greater than 20 feet) is removed and the middle part of the RX moved to the top. So you have intermediate which is bigger field of view and don't have to lift you head to read compputer.

You understand with these on your distance vision will not be clear.

Thank you very much Dr. Hagan,
What you are saying is that all I need to do is stop back at the optician's and have him make me a pair of mid range type vision glasses?  And they will be able to do this after reading my prescription. ?   If so,  that would be great and save me time and also quite a bit of money, hopefully I can have these lenses inserted into an older pair of frames I have and no longer use.
I do realize I will not be able to see at a distance with them.   My progressive lenses handle that fine.  Just being able to have what you call computer type glasses,  will be very satisfying.
Thank you very much and have a Great Memorial Day.

Hopefully they will make this change at no charge to you. Most all opticians make changes without charge for 30 days, our optical goes out to 60 days. Some opticals have money back guarentee within 30 days.

You must have gotten diamond studded frames to run up a $1000 bill.

I had to get my progressives made with a new prescription September '09.  With the new Rx, I could not see the computer screen without tilting my head.  It was annoying.

I had a spare pair of frames, and thought about getting computer glasses (also called an office prescription), but you know, I never did do that.  After a period of time, I just adjusted to my new prescription, and now my progressives work extremely well for all distances.  Your mileage may vary.

Dr Hagan??? !!!
Where in the world did I post that my eye glasses and exams cost me $1000.00 ?
They were a little less than  $90.00
I don't think I'd look too good with diamond studded frames !
Enjoy the holiday !   :o)

Hi and thanks for the positive comment.   I doubt I will be as lucky as you,  I have some funky thing wrong with my eyes that when I look down to use the computer,  my eyes seem to feel as though they are crossing.   Middle age......no fun.   I've had this all my adult life,  but lately it's getting worse.
I will keep trying though,  to see if my outcome turns out like your's.
