Dr. O

a while back, you told me I probably had recurrent erosions and said to get to eye MD, and I did. I thank you so much. You were correct. Plus, I have glaucoma, the hereditary kind. I have been taking the eye drops, but they were not what you had said. He prescribed ketorolac drops, along with timotol Maleate. In the same week I found out that i had a low thyroid, so I am taking Levothyroxine, and Dexilant for Gerd. Anyway, I am in so much pain with my eyes, and the eye Dr. I went to seemed unconcerned about the erosions. Now, I have taken a full round of antibiotics for sinus infection, as well, but my eye sockets, mainly the right one, feels like raw hamburger meat with this cough that is like adult whooping cough, so I feel like my eyes will pop right out when I'm coughing, and I almost pass out. I must wear sunglasses even indoors, and I know Glaucoma is painless. Are the erosions causing this eye pain, or is it just sinus related? Also, my right eye is running uncontrollably at times. Can you make any sense of this? I sure can't and am afraid, and don't know which Dr. to see.

Okay. Thank you, Dr. Hagan. If you have an answer, to it, I'll take anything I can get, right now.

You are on a beta blocker eye drop. I never use they first, always the last choice due to high incidence of side effects. One effect is a chronic cough or chronic sinus drainage that never gets well. I was on beta blockers once and had both.

I suggest strongly you get a second opinion about the recurrent errosions. Read my paper on the subject on my blog.

Try and get off beta blockers and on a safer medicine. I have no idea why you'r on ketorlac.

Oh, okay. Thanks. The reason for suspecting erosions was that frequently, it feels as if a needle is being inserted into my tearducts and it is extrememly painful, making my eyes water so I have to keep rubbing them. I now feel that all over the surface of my eyes, intermittently. However, when i wake up, it isn't a problem, mostly, as the day progresses. This was before the meds. I am not taking the beta blocker anymore. Thank you so much! I will go and read your article.

My primary concern is whether the artificial tears or Muro drops would counteract the Glaucoma medicine, Timolol Maleate. One adds moisture, one reduces internal pressure, I am so confused.

Artificial tears will not interfere with glaucoma drops provided you don't use them for 30 minutes before or after instilling the glaucoma drops. Sooner and there is the possibility of washing them out or diluting them.

Repeat that I'm concerned you're having systemic side effects to beta blockers. Discuss switching with your Eye MD or at least stopping them for 2-3 weeks to see if you don't feel much much better.

Thank you so much! You are a great person! That's all I need to know. I'm not touching beta blockers again, no matter what! The universe smiles on you!
