Extremely light sensitive after a retinal detachment surgery

Extremely light sensitive after a retinal detachment surgery

I am experiencing extreme light sensitive 7 months after a RD surgery and cause me a lot of pain everyday. I cannot walk out during a sunny lunch time even I wear 2 dark sunglasses and a cap, one of the glasses is really deep dark. I need to wear a light sunglass to look at the monitor. The light sensitivity only happens to the eye with surgery. However, because my good eye is also over-protected by sun-glass plus I avoid going outdoor, it seems even my good eye start to be a little bit light sensitive
My surgeon and another eye doctor said that my retina is okay cannot explain and just think this may due to some tense or psychological issue. I found that my eye is more vulnerable to light when it is getting more tired closing to the end of the day. The eye really get pain (muscle pain feel).
Do you know if neuro-ophthalmologist may have some idea about my scenario ? Or there is another field may deal with my scenarios.
My life is definitely ruined and I really need some advice to help me.

Thanks

I think a neuro ophthalmologist would be the next type MD to consult.

Dr Hagan:
It will take a while for me to see a neuro ophthalmologist in Canada.
You did mentioned something about E/N/T last time. I also noticed my sinus also have some strange and discomfort feeling whenever there is eye pain.
Do you think they can be related ?
I may need to make an appointment with a E/N/T specialist. It may take 2 months to wait.

I am going to see my family doctor tomorrow and I want to provide a little evidence to him and he may put a urgent stamp on the referral.
Do you think that the sinus can be related to eye pain ? Are there any examples like this ?

Thanks

Hi, sorry to hear about your light sensitivity.  I have the same problem, and have had it for the past 2 years.   I cannot be outside without cap/hat and really dark sunglasses (NOIR medical 2% amber).   If i need to drive in the sun, I have to wear another pair on top of them (blueblockers).  Sound like this may be a result of your surgery.   Personally ive tested pos for Autoimmune retinopathy (my problem is bilateral) however no structural changes can be seen.  At this point excessive light makes my light perception deteriorate.     I've never received a good explaination of light sensitivity, but it can be the fact that the photoreceptor cells do not adapt to the light anymore like a normal healthy eye.  And yes, it seems the more we "hide" from the light, the worse it gets..but there really is no other choice.   Do you have any other symptoms in that eye? (glare, halos, starbursts..)

Had the same symptoms, sunlight & driving was just absolute agony. I had oil removed & wasn't stitched up well so I had to go back the next day for another stitch. Had the worse headache of my life after that. I've been using Durezol twice daily for about two months & it seems to have gone away, at least the just awful part. My sister's pretty saintly, she prayed for me. I just believe it worked & I'll tell her about you.
