Eye Surgery- High Myopia

Eye Surgery- High Myopia

Hi Doctor,

I would be more happy if this query is answered by John C Hagan.

Yesterday I had been to doctor to get to know which surgery would suit for my eyes. Doctor had confirmed me that Lasik is not possible and the only other option for me would be ICL. I personally would not like to go for ICL due to the risks in it. In this case if I undergo Lasik surgery what problems would I come across in the near/future? My power is stable over 2 years now.

I am wearing contact lens now. To my right eye it is 8.5 and it is 7.5 to my left eye. This is my contact lens power. Doctor said I have thick cornea which will support LASIK surgery but due to high myopia and also there was a test conducted and the test names starts with Pa as I don't exactly remember it. Doctor had opened some graph which is a result of the test and said according to the graph my eyes dont support Lasik. Could you please give me your comments?

Thanks

With that level of myopia, in my opinion, you should forget all about any surgical procedure on your eyes, unless it is to treat the underlying condition. It's far, far, far too risky.

So what? You have "high myopia" and so all the normal rules do not (or at least should not!) apply to you. Dr Hagan will give you his expert opinion as well. Do yourself a favour and educate yourself more on your condition before you make any decision.

The test was pachymetry and it measures corneal thickness. Since you are at the upper level of what can be corrected with lasik if too much cornea is removed the eye becomes unstable (ectasia).

I would suggest you get a second opinion from a second refractive surgeon if both agree then you could consider having lasik and reducing the amount of myopia by 75 to 85%. That is having a refractive error after surgery of -2.00 (which will work great for reading without glasses after age 40).

Doctor,

It was pentacam test which was done. My cornea is thick enough to undergo lasik surgery. But the pentacam results showed that I cannot undergo lasik surgery
