Eye pain when lying down

Eye pain when lying down

Hi,  I am 24 and I went to get a massage today.  About 5 minutes into the massage (which I was laying face down for), my left eye starting having a large amount of pain and watering.  I have no changed vision, but anytime I lay face down I get a pain that feels like someone is poking me in the back of my eyeball.  I have been sitting working on the computer for a few hours and there is a weird feeling, but not painful like it was.

Should I be concerned?

This is a very strange symptom.  The first question is whether you have had other massages recently and experienced the same thing?  Pain with watering suggests that you scratched the front surface of your eye but this would probably cause some blurred vision and would not come and go.  One possibility is that the nerves that supply sensation to the skin of the temples (which also carry sensation from behind the eye) were irritated somehow, and triggered what we call a "referred" pain.  If the symptom persists you should see a neuro-ophthalmologist.  You can find one at www.aao.org.
