Eyeball Swelling & Broken Blood Vessels

My father had cataract surgery on one eye approx. 3 months ago. About 1 month ago began to experience liquid in his eyes to the point where he couldn't read (some days) and generally not the same good vision he once had.

Went to dr. today and after tests was told that his eyeballs are swollen and he has broken blood vessels. In addition to that he has macular degeneration - prior to today's dr. visit he had been told it was in check and was restricted to just the one eye. It too, now, has advanced and has spread to both eyes. Dr. told him it was a good thing he came in today or he could have passed the point where things may be able to be corrected with surgery on Friday.

Hoping someone here may have some information on what we are dealing with and whether this could lead to blindness. I know the macular degeneration eventually can, but am really interested in finding out what may be causing the swelling and broken blood vessels.

Those terms are too vague to be specific. The most common cause of "bleeding" in macular degeneration is the development of "wet macular degeneration". It is treated with light therapy (photodynamic therapy) or injection of medications (Avastin, Lucentis or Macugen) into the eye to try and stop the bleeding.
