Eyeglasses - PD & Hi Index Lens Questions/Problems

Hi,

I'm having some issues with a pair of glasses I recently had made.

My Rx is -6.50/-6.75, so it's decently strong. No astigmatism. I have hi index 1.67 lenses. The problem I'm having is that when I look at things that are off center and towards the bridge of my glasses they get really blurry. For example, if I am looking at the center of my PC screen and without moving my head and while closing my right eye, the task bar in the lower right of my screen is pretty blurry. I've never noticed this on my old pair of glasses and it's making things seem 'off' and 'blurry' because one eye is in focus while the other is quite out of focus when looking off-center. My old pair was -6.00/-6.00 with polycarbonate lenses (unknown index) and I did notice some blur, but not nearly as much as this.

My vision towards the middle and towards the arms of the glasses is fine. It's like the entire focus of the lens needs to be moved to the bridge of the frames or something. This makes me think the PD may need adjusted or it has something to do w/the hi index lenses. I was reading that hi index lenses can cause more distortion on the edges of the lens??

Should I look into a lower index lens? How about my PD? What would cause this? I know glasses have a tendency to blur towards the edges, but this seems out of ordinary.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Dr. O,

Thanks for the comment! This is what I was thinking as well. I called up the supplier of my glasses and requested an exchange for a lower index lens (1.61) which they agreed to. I will see how the new lenses look when I receive them. I have a plastic frame, so the slightly larger lens won't be noticeable behind the thick plastic frame I think. I expect it to be slightly heavier.

I'm excited to receive the new lenses and get back to seeing well again! :)

I'll report back what I notice with the lower index lenses.

Thanks!

The PDs are probably right if the vision in the center is ok.  This is probably due to a higher index of refraction glasses.
