Farsightedness over 40

  I have been nearsighted since the age of 12.  Now that I'm over 40, I'm having problems with farsightedness.  But, why is it that sometimes I can read through my glasses and then sometimes my vision is so blurred that I have to take my glasses off to read?  It varies so much that I'm afraid that if I get new glasses they won't help with it. Please comment.

As we get older, our ability to focus on near objects decreases and we need reading glasses.  This usually starts around age 40.  For those who are near-sighted, they will have the same trouble reading with their glasses.  When they take their glasses off, they can sometimes read better.  Removing glasses in nearsighted people is the same as looking through reading glasses.
You describe your vision as fluctuating.  This is typical as one starts to require reading glasses.
You need a good eye examination with a good eyeglass prescription.
