Flashes in left eye/dark area back of eye

I'm currently trying to research possibilities for the 'flashing' I have been having for the last two years in my left eye only.

I'll give you a brief overview of my situation...

The camera/torch type flash occurs between 1-3 times a day or every other day in my left eye. It happens at any occasion - eating a meal, watching tv, looking at the laptop etc. This never occurs in my right eye. I have been referred to my local eye hospital who have discovered a 'dark area' at the back of the eye. They say that this dark area is an abnormality of the blood vessels in that area but they cannot determine what exactly it is at the moment. Eye specialists keep on saying 'this looks interesting' but cannot give me any answers!! The optician who carried out my general sight test today decribed the abnormality in my left eye as looking like a marbled effect. My vision is not affected by what I have described above. The doctor said my retina is intact. I worry what this may lead to in the future.

For extra info, I wear contact lenses for short sightedness and have done for approimately 13 years. About 10 years some one accidently hit me directly in the eye with a golf club (pretty hard!) and I dont know if this could have any thing to do with the problems now?!

I would be grateful if anyone could provide  additional info on what I have described above.

Thank you in advance

Thank you for your response. I have already had four visual field tests done which came back fine. Hopefully the doctor will keep investigating until an answer is found.

If you have not already done so, I would see a retina specialist for an evaluation.  Testing with fluorescein angiography, ultrasound of the retina, and visual field testing may be helpful.
