Flashing in periphery of the left eye

I began having flashes in my left eye last night. After a while I began to see the periphery of my eye as I blinked or moved my I around. Please advise.

I went to an ophthalmologist as you directed. He said I had a posterior vitreous detachment. He said I will experience flashing and I would continue to see the periphery of my eye move for awhile. He said I was fine, but he wanted me back in 6 weeks to make sure there are no other complications (detached retina which could happen). Thanks for the help. I am still having the flashes but they're not as frequent as they were a few days ago. Thanks again! Pablo77

Dr.

I read on line that a detached retina could lead to blindness. If the retina is detached only in one eye I wouldn't necessarily lose sight in both eyes, would I?

Thanks!

Only a dilated exam by an Eye MD ophthalmologist can tell if this is a not serious posterior vitreous detachment or a very serious retinal detachment.

Thank you for responding to my case. I suspected a detached retina after reading the info on this site referencing vitreous detachment. I understand that this can go away over time or is that not correct? I know my wife has it off and on..

Thanks!

You need to contact an ophthalmologist and have a dilated retina exam as soon as possible. Use the search and archives to read about flashes and floaters and also retinal detachment.

"seeing the periphery of my eye"  is a term several patients with retinal detachment have used in my practice.
