If it ALWAYS occurs when you wake up from sleep it likely is recurrent erosion syndrome. Use the search feature and read about this. Also go to my home page and read my journal posting in the last few days on this. This is especially true if you have scratched that eye in the past. Don't sleep under a fan, don't have air blowing across your face. Put a lubricating gel in your eyes at bedtime: e.g. Genteal Gel; Refresh Liquigel; Systane Gel, when you get up in AM don't rub your eyes. Rinse with warm water and instill regular artificial tears. This is far and away the most common cause. Other causes include an eye that does not shut over-night right this can occur after Bell's Palsy, eyelid surgery.
