Friend with related issues to May 05, 2008 question - optical nerve swelling and hemmoraging

I read the above correspondence between John C. Hagan III, MD, FACS.  I have a friend male friend that is 55 years of age, with a similar condition.  He has seen a retina specialist and has gotten no answers.  He recently had blood work and his protein levels are off the charts, along with anemia.  He just completed a 24 hour urine specimine and will they will be taken bone marrow in a couple of days.  These work-ups are leading to multiple myeloma, though he has no symptoms.  Can Choroidal Neovasulization be related???  We are not far from the Philadelphia, PA area.  Can you recommend any retina specialists in that area; Wills Eye Hospital, University of Pennsyvania, Thomas Jefferson University, Temple University.  This doctor is affiliated with Wills Eye, though he didn't go to the Phila. office, and he was not overly impressed with this doctor and is very concerned.  Are there other retina conditions related to high protein levels, anemia, bone marrow issues, etc., that should be looked into???  We are quite concerned and do not know where to turn to next!

Dear Donnamarie0415,

I would recommend that you seek the care of a retinal specialist.  Go to find an eyeMD section on the AAO.org web site and you will be able to find a retinal specialist.  There are many excellent retinal specialists in Philadelphia, and make two appointments to find a doctor with whom your friend feels most comfortable.
