Fuchs Endothelial

My daughter has just returned from the opticians and been told she has Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy effecting one eye.  My mother has the same condition, but ecceting both eyes.  From looking on the internet it would seem the condition usually occurs in people of the age of 40 and above, my daughter is only 22.  Can you please advise on the condition, whether it is unusual to have it at this age, will she have similar problems with her other eye and is there any permanent cure.

Regards

Jeff

Hello Jeff,   I have done several extensive posting's on Fuchs' Dystrophy in the two eye care forums. Please use the search feature on this page to pull up these discussions which asked the same question you have.

It is possible for a 22 year old to exhibit the first signs of Fuchs Dystrophy which are 'bumps' called guttatta on the back side of the cornea.

Your daughter should be check by an ophthalmologist (Eye physician and surgeon) for a baseline examination. She may need a corneal cell count or/and corneal thickness measurement.

If other individuals with Fuchs' have NOT had to have a corneal transplant (or the very new DSAEK procedure) this bodes well for your daughter.
