Glare after second capsulotomy

Glare after second capsulotomy

I had cataract surgery in my left eye on July 14, 2009.  Due to capsular wrinkling, I had a YAG laser capsulotomy on August 5, 2009.  I had pronounced glare at night, so on November 5, 2009, I had a second capsulotomy (the YAG opening was enlarged).  The glare condition has not improved (today is November 8, 2009).  Can you suggest how long it takes for an improvement in the glare condition to be noticeable?

If you have a multifocal lens implant, it may never improve.  If you had a monofocal lens implant, then the glare may gradually improve as the remaining rim of capsule becomes more opaque and blocks the scattered "glare light" from reaching your retina.

Dear Dr. Brown:

Thank you for your reply.

I saw my surgeon today.  He told me that I have an AcrySof MA60 6.0 mm lens implanted in my left eye.  (I believe that this is a monofocal lens.)  The IOL power is 20.5.  My pupil size is 4.0 mm.  I don't know the diameter of the newly enlarged YAG opening, except to say that he (the surgeon) told me that "it was [now] opened as much as it could be."  Would the size of the YAG opening be helpful for you to know?

Your explanation of the reason why the glare may gradually improve seems reasonable to me.  Based on the information that I have provided, do you have any sense of the the timing or the probability of the improvement?

Thanks again.  I am happy to know that there is at least a possibility of improvement.
